I have to confess that I really do enjoy the interview process of collecting dialogue for the Porcelain Philosophers project. It´s an opportunity to have one-on-one time with people that I find interesting. It´s surprising that in every session I´ve learned something substantial and very personal about the person. In the case of working with someone who I don´t already know, first impressions are always proven to be incredibly wrong.

In my wanderings of the Internet I stumbled across the site Beautiful Agony through an erotic site listing on Jessica´s (JessicaDoyle.ca) site. I´m really excited about the discovery of Beautiful Agony as they´ve proven that the thrill that I get from the interview process seems to be enough to support their whole site. There´s nothing sexually graphic about the contents but the opportunity to peek in on people´s most intimate moments.

So you guessed it, the movies playing on their site are head shots of people masturbating. Many are followed with interviews discussing sexual aspects of their lives. In both cases it personal and incredibly interesting… never mind the tingles and trill that I´m sure you´ll enjoy as an added bonus.
In the course of my interviews I´ve discovered that most of us have had some type of intimate experience in a bathroom stall. Often this is an experience by ourselves and in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. Sometimes we just need a release, throw in the trill of getting caught and I think it spells pure magic for some.
I´d love to try to capture this experience in my film. As inspired by Beautiful Agony, I have no intentions of displaying anything but the sounds and facial expressions. They´ve shown me that leaving a little to imagination of the viewer is far more powerful than the graphic details.
So what is it about the magical faces and sounds that we make when we touch ourselves? Why is it that in any other context it would be silly to the viewer and yet in this case we´re draw to it with intrigue? If you haven´t already, check out the samples and please oh please leave a comment.

Nick, indeed we’re all a little jaded when it comes to this stuff but I’d like to think that it’s real. I’m sure setting yourself up in front of a video camera with your hands in your pants does make to think… does this look cool, is my hair OK, is this entertaining… so perhaps there is some thought going into what we’re watching. Yummy none the less.

I’d like to do a behind the curtain with spot light. So that you can only see the shadow of the body movement.

Interesting, a scene in the Porcelain Philosophers project where the character is masturbating in a bathroom stall. Following Beautiful Agony example you only want to display a silhouette behind a curtain? I’m not sure how to work a curtain in to the bathroom stall, any ideas?
I’ve been thinking about using close face shots. Perhaps camera angles above the character as a nod to Beautiful Agony’s setup. Most of their clips are from a birds eye view looking down at their head. The depth of view could be very short where anything below the shoulders would be blurry. There would be hints of movement but nothing clear.
The trick (or rather the fun) will be in collecting the audio recording. Anyone willing to share their agony?

Sorry, behind the curtain idea is totally my personal preference. It’s nothing to do with your project…
However…showing the masturbating shadow in the beggining of the scene might be effective..

Although the facial expressions are priceless, it’s the audio that gets me hot and bothered. Get a good audio clip and the scene will explain itself… not that I’m volunteering or anything…

Intriguing site; Beautiful Agony, but where is the agony behind masturbation? I agree with a quick shadow shot. These videos are initially arousing, but require a little more to keep the attention.

Ah the great Rex has appeared, it’s a treat to hear from you!
For me the “little more” is the confessions video that goes along with each Agony flic. I’ll point you to a few via email so you can see what I mean. I find it incredibly interesting to see inside a person first from an intimate perspective and then discover another layer by what they share in conversation in the confessions video.
I think arousal and desire works on many levels. This is the first site that I’ve found that “gets it”. Perhaps you’ll fly over to Van for the Agony party that Junko is suggesting, all in the name of getting your attention of course.
