Sooo… there I am poking around Google looking for information on “puppet making” which leads me to a very different kind of puppet or rather “dolls”. Welcome to the wonderful world of “Jewel Rosa“. I started looking for the Beautiful Agony option but it appears that it’s still in the works.
I’m sure my father would have a fit if he knew that I had anything to do with puppets and especially dolls. In this case, would throwing in a sexual element make it OK… err, I think not but it does tweak my curiosity. I mean really, the craftsmanship on these things is incredible - sorry Dad, I really had to look. It’s kind of like slowing down on the highway at the scene of a car crash, you just have to look but no one really wants to see too many details. Sooo, go on…
With some serious help from my Japanese contacts (Junko), I was able to get the details on these magical creations. It appears that for a very reasonable 660,000¥ ($6,600 Canadian/US) you can have a friend for life. This is complete with things like a silicon head (for hugging of course), wig, underwear (specifically of the fancy variety), pubic hair and what I’m sure is the deal maker - an “Anniversary ring“.
There’s also a lot of talk about “Large hole sets” and “Hole cover with repair kit” which I’m not clear on the details. Perhaps someone can explain in the comment section below??
Needless to say, my interest in creating the perfect puppet for my film Porcelain Philosophers has been revitalized. I’m even considering the “Large hole set” for the film once I figure out the details.
If you’d like to investigate further, please visit their site (orient-doll.com), it’s a bit of surreal experience. Everything is in Japanese but with the help of Google a translated version can be found here… which is an adventure in itself.
Enjoy…

Oh, now I know why you are going to Japan with about $6600 CDN!

“I mean really, the craftsmanship on these things is incredible…”
I’ve heard them called many things, but that’s a new one.

Rex, I’m really sorry for having to borrow the money from you but rest assured that “Jewel” will be yours if you really need a return on your investment. I’ll even be sure to get you a fresh head if necessary!

julia,
Do I dare ask what else has been used to describe “Jewel”? Come to think of it, “julia” -> “Jewel”, hmmm… and some of the “head” options (towards the bottom of the page) have a striking resemblance to you!! Have you been moonlighting as a doll model?!? How cute, my own private “jewel-e-ah” that can pull out of the closest for those “special” moments.

Hey, it also says they have the showroom in Osaka! (and I know where exactly the shop is)
…do you?… do you want to go have a peak? or poke?

Junko, sweet! I’m sensing a great photo opportunity, perhaps some hot girl, girl action - the test will be if the viewer can tell who’s real and who’s a “Jewel”??
I wonder if they could build a “doll” for my movie? A donation of course because Rex’s loan will only cover the cost of one and well, she’s shy… you know living in my closet and “stuff”.

Maybe it’s just my childhood fear of dolls, but the thought of finding one of these casually propped up in a livingroom (or perhaps laying under the bed) gives me chills. Sorry Jewl Rosa– I’m sure you’re a really nice girl, but you’re too close to the real thing!

Sara, remind me to NOT let you look in my closet the next time you’re over!

[…] This report is a result of my recent travels to Osaka, Japan with Junko (http://junkoogawa.com). I’ve reported in the past about the Jewel Rosa Dolls with the story “Who needs puppets when you can have dolls“. Having a “hands on” experence with the dolls has provided some additional insight. Thanks to Junko’s amazing sluth skills we were able to err… experence the dolls first hand by visiting the showroom in Osaka. As you can see in the picture, Junko wasn’t shy to test out the goods.
