Porcelain Philosophers Update

December 4th, 2006 · 5 Comments

Armature JointsThe Porcelain Philosophers project has recently made some progress on several fronts - armature construction, sound track recording and in the news.

Recently I discovered a method for armature assembly that involves ball and socket joints. This is a significant development as it takes the process one step closer to building a functional puppet that will work with foam latex. I’ll share the details in the How-To section once I have all the details worked out.

Geoffery LeathwoodThere’s also been several audio sessions in the recording studio with Geoffery. Samples of the recordings will be released for your review once I polish them up for web consumption. Currently it’s about 5 minutes in length with three separate characters talking and Geoffery’s music tying it all together. A small sample of the percussion side of the sessions goes something like this:

Sound Track Sample

32 Kbps, 11025 Hz, Stereo (96.0:1)

A huge “thank you” goes out to Jessica (JessicaDoyle.ca) for including the Porcelain Philosophers project in her recent article in The Blog Herald - Porcelain Philosopher’s and The Writings on the Stall. I find it really interesting how she, as a writer, has taken the basic concept behind my project and made it into her own observations about the process of spending time in a bathroom stall. It’s also exciting to read about others who have pursued the idea in various ways - you really should check it out, it’s a fun read.

The truck…uh…trAck sounds fantastic! There is a great progress from the first recording session. Now the sound and the dialog are united, and I am simply excited to see how the sound is going to fit in the characters’ expressions.

You might want to listen to “War & Peace” by Ryuichi Sakamoto, since the song is basically a sound on a buch of dialogs of people talking about the theme “war & peace”. The style of this song could be a good inspiration for the ending theme of your project.

Just a FYI for everyone, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “War & Peace” sounds like this:

Ahhh Junko, I’ve taken the time to listen to the Sakamoto track. Is this your inspiration for the idea you expressed to me that farmers were the first warriors?

Music really is core to your being. I’m thankful that you’ve shared this with me as it has provide to be more food for thought on the recording process for the project. I’m going back into the studio this Thursday, I’ll be sure to share this with Geoffery before the session.

I’m also a fan of Peter Gabriel’s work on “Passion”

Geoffery’s efforts remind me a little of this magical album and film.

Ah, cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard “War and Peace” on a university radio show once in the car and was never able to get the track or artist name– thank you Junko! I found it so moving.

Darren, this short clip is such a teaser! You’ll have to post more soon. ;) I especially like how Candice’s lilting voice fits with Geoffrey’s music.
