It appears that the stars are aligning in the Canadian animation world. I’ve recently discovered the Hothouse program being offered by the The Canadian National Film Board (NFB). The program is described as:
The NFB created the Hothouse to encourage new talent, to provide an A-to-Z experience in professional animation film making, and to re-imagine ways of making animation; ways that are faster, more flexible and that celebrate the shortest of short forms while maintaining creative and technical excellence.
I plan to submit an outline for a concept involving my Porcelain Philosophers project. The basics of the proposal are:
Animation Hothouse — Call for Submissions
Make a 30 second animation film in 12 weeks total.
Impossible? Nope. Tough? You bet.
Want to try? Are you an emerging filmmaker? Read on.DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: January 15, 2007
The National Film Board of Canada seeks submissions from emerging filmmakers (young and old), and artists intrigued by animation art, for the fourth edition of the Animation Hothouse. This year’s Hothouse runs from March 5 to May 25, 2007, at the Animation Studio in Montreal.
The theme for this Hothouse is: A Chance Encounter
Check out the results of past Hothouses by visiting the the Perpetual Motions NFB web pages.
Life is full of dreams and this is officially at the top of my list, wish me luck in applying. Would anyone be interested in attending a screening in Montreal if I managed to weasel my way into this program?

Forgive me for this long quote, but you know me…
“Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come their way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
‘Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.’”

Believe it or not, I wasn’t quite finished what I wanted to say… so I’ll finish here. Darren, I believe your stumbling across this Hothouse program is all a part of the “magic” you triggered when you committed to your dream. It’s exciting for me as your friend to stand by and watch the pieces fall into place. All I can do is cheer… Go, Darren, Go!

Julia, remind me to always come to you when I’m in need of a quote. With people like you behind me, the “boldness” seems to come naturally. Here’s to “moving then Providence“.
For those wondering, details on W.H. Murray can be found here.
